Exorbitant Intro

Who comes to attempt a daring, spectacular and groundbreaking rescue ? Who comes to restore equity, justice, fairness and righteousness ? Who helps altruistic, when fellow citizens are in inconceivable perils ? Two animals...two friends...two legends..two members of the Freelance Police will not even lightly stir their pinkie for the townsmen in extremity, their successors in emergencies, and the women in destitution. Unless, the self seeking hare and a egoistic hound are pertained and affected from the nasty doings, presentiments and dark deeds fulfilled by diabolic criminals , sick rascals, psychotic villains and sinister evildoers......

Or when they can just shoot every single quantum of matter out of them. Well, anyways...adventure veterans and comic-book freaks know this wild duo since a few decades. Sam, "the six foot tall anthropomorphic dog" and Max, the lagomorpha- "a hyperkinetic rabbity thing". Enough talk, Sam & Max Hit The Road was released 1993 for the PC. Notwithstanding, it should be the only Sam & Max game, but because of the wacky story and the rare use of such unique black, painful humor, it was a big success and had a large fan community.

Comeback after 13 years

On the November of 2006, after 13 years, Sam & Max remigrated to the PC-- a adventure game in a episodic format. Every few weeks, a new adventure was released for a bargain buy. The Wii version will include all six episodes. Our anti-hero cops will face on manipulated lives, brain washing and the assassination of a president. Of course, Sam & Max are already on the job, trying to solve the case...but before that, the two cops need their telephone. But their telefon was stolen by a fat, greasy rat. It wants Swiss Cheese as the ransom. I am not going to tell you the answer, but it is, to say it in a fair way, somehow "different".

Easier puzzles

To wrap it all up, you will get a classic adventure-feeling just like in the good old early days. But the most important element will get a new twist: The solution of the assignments. The 1993 game Sam & Max Hit The Road had many tricky solutions that were just absurd and complicated. Nowadays, the challenges should by far logically . The dialogs between the odd friends will make sure that the game will still keep its charm, that it be pretty audacious and saucily, blatant and starkly.

What changed ?

I could play a preview-version of it, and found almost no changes to the PC version. Sure, the graphics are not good as the PC version. But at least you can play it from the couch or whatever. First you meet you a few teenie stars, that obviously are brainwashed. Noticeable is the amount of talking. It is almost like a interactive sitcom. In another episode, you actually are in a talk show

Last word

Overall, good synchro, nice humor and six episodes to solve. Adventure fans should annotate the release date. I am happy that this is released for the PC. I will buy this one, because I suspect a bargain buy. Then nothing stands against dirty cop work.
I give it 4 guns out of five.

Pipe-Mania DS Preview

Another retro-remake -- but do we really feel the tube obsession ?

Well, most of my fellow readers should start floating in nostalgic dreams and childhood memories when they hear the title Pipe Mania, a Commodore 64 classic. This puzzle game will be remade for the Nintendo DS. The gameplay is quite simple for our modern standards: You have to place several pipes in a certain manner. If you manage to connect the pipes to the drainage before you run out of time and lose, you can continue with the next level. Of course the game will have a new twist. Extra items and a few new events, many unlockables and new modes like "Puzzle", "Surival" will make this game a solid variety to other puzzle games.

Worst Games Of All Time : Episode VII : Friday The 13th

Hi. This is the seventh part of the series "Worst Games Of All Time". If you like it, you can read the other six parts !!

Link To :
====> Episode I : E.T. The Extra Terrestrial <====
====>
Episode II : Superman 64 <==== ====> Episode III : Pac-Man For Atari 2600 <==== ====> Episode IV : Bad Street Brawler <==== ====> Episode V : Dr.Jekyll And Mr. Hyde <==== ====> Episode VI : Shaq Fu <==== ====> Episode VII : Friday The 13th (You`re reading it, genius) <==== Now, let`s begin !!

Friday The 13th

WARNING :
Italicized text uses ironic, sarcastic, and black humor. It also uses minimal profanity. Following text is not recommended for children under 13.

Well, Friday the 13th on the NES. At the start screen, you can see a knife flying directly into the eyes of Jason`s mask. That should indicate a very good and action-packed game. True, oh so true. This game is a synonym of the word "great". Everyone loves it. It`s so superb, that I`m reviewing it`s excellence. Outstanding. I can`t find a word to describe it. Everybody loves this game, because it`s the flaw of complete awe. The concept is just brilliant : Making a video-game based on a crappy R-rated slasher movie for kids. Just cool.

There are six camp bastards you can play as. It doesn`t matter if they are black, white or yellow. It doesn`t even matter if they existed in the movie. That`s what I call terrific. Nobody cares because it`s a good game. You go around the camp throwing rocks. Yeah, rocks are fatal. You throw rocks at zombies... and other stuff. The rocks just fly in an arc over the enemy. Peace keepers would love this. You run around trying to find fire-places to light. Just cool.

What more could you ask for ? Thus, every great game has a map screen. This concept works outstanding in sidescrollers, because you know in which direction you`re going. Yeah, cause there is a left and a right direction. If you`re walking left, you`re walking right on the map and vice versa. Why make things easy, if you can make it overcomplicated ? That gives the little twist of challenge for hardcore gamers.
But..but that`s just cool. It makes it more challenging. I love figuring out the basic logic made complicated in an 8-bit video game. I love it. It is just great.. That was the ironic, satirical and sarcastic part. Now the facts are coming.

This is just crap. Crap. Crap. It was produced by the crappiest gaming company ever. Ljn

Donkey licking
Foul-mouthed jade producing
Nutcrackers.

LJN. The bastards who produced Roger Rabbit, Nightmare on Elm Street and this garbage. This is a "son of a bull-balls sucking bastard weirdo"-kind of game !!

I love this game. The rocks that fly an arc over your enemies are so useful. Upgrading to an knife is not mandatory. The knife hurts and destroys the enemy. And we don`t want that, do we? We only use biological and natural weapons made by Motha Nature. After a while, a really awesome and expensive produced peeping sound comes. That is the "Jason-Alarm". When you hear it, you have to go to the map screen. A giant red dot indicates where you are. A gigantic white dot indicates the area where Jason is killin` little puny brats, a.k.a "Camp Councler(s)". I think the red dot is supposed to be a human, and the white one is supposed to be a cabin. But that doesn`t matter. The game is unique it is very own way. So creative, so masterful. Just cool.

Now let`s go left to the cabin where Jason is. I guess I should go left. So I went left, because the cabin was on the left side of the map screen. Guess what ? I`ve walked to the right because I walked left ingame !! That is completely scientific, logical and self explanatory. So there I am, "following the yellow brick road" on the way to the cabin. But that`s O.K because this game kicks George W. Bush`s butt !! So, now I know that I have to go right because it`s on the left side of the screen. Now I``m walking in the right direction. The bare basics of right/left do not apply. That gives the game the right twist. And that`s why this game is so great !! Logic is for pussys... and unlogical actions/reactions rule the video games !!

Finally, I`m in the cabin. Right away, a strange man is saying : "Thank you". He thanks you for walking in the cabin before getting killed by Jason. Wow, I wonder what the strange man will say in hell to the camp councler. The strange man only has a head, but no face. This game must have a high budget. Jason is somewhere in this humongous cabin. This must be the biggest camping cabin ever. He`s coming. He`s coming. Damn, there was a sudden sound the made me crap in my slip.

Now I`m fighting Jason like in "Mike Tyson`s Punch-Out !". Jason sure looks scary in that purple T-shirt. So scary. I defeated him, but he`ll be back, just like in the movie. Even after they counted the fourth installment "The Final Chapter", it had seven moviea after that, not counting the remake of the first movie that is going to be produced in 2009. So for now, I`m walking around triying to find fire-places that I should light up. Isn`t this fun ? The cabin is 2.5d. The controls are really fluent.

This game is a major suckage.

Well, what should we say ? I``m walking around, looking for fire-places and answering the Jason-Alaem once in a while. Once you change the camp-councler, you get the o-so good rock. That accomplished a lot. The day and night transitions are smooth, not like in other games a lá "Castlevania II : Simon`s Quest". It`s is a big improvent over Simons Quest (Note of the author : This sentence is true). Jason comes out once in a while to scare the crap out of you Even Jason`s mom makes an appearance.

Once all of your people are dead, a very entertaining black screen shows up, with following context :

YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS
ARE DEAD.

GAME OVER.

Not ironic text : What, ya serious ? "Dead" ? Nobody dies in a Nintendo game, they`re "destroyed" or "defeated" !! That`s ingenious. That`s the best Game-Over screen I ever saw. I`m serious. The last seven sentences were serious. Dead serious. Dead freakin` serious. That`s fantastic. You and your friends are dead. Game Over. Don`t you share the same opion ? That is the best screen ever, not including the " Your are dead " screen in Resident Evil 4. If there is a sequel of this craptastic game it would have to say :

YOU`RE FREAKING DEAD.
YOU`RE FIENDS ARE DEAD.
YOU`RE FRIENDS ARE DEAD.
YOU`RE SISTER DIED ON CRACK.
YOU`RE PETS ARE BEING IMPALED ALIVE
BY A HORDE OF CRAZY WORLD OF WARCRAFT
ALLIANCE MEMBERS.
YOU`RE MOM IS BEING SKINNED ALIVE.
YOU`RE DAD IS FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET.
GAME OVER.

PS : THIS GAME IS HORRIBLE !!!

Mario Kart Wii

The kart cult will live on !!

Ask a Nintendo fan-boy about his favorite racing game. In nine out of ten cases, a Nintendo fan would say : *Mario Kart Wii !!* Now we get to see the awesome Wii-version !!

April 11 : Mario Kart Wii was released in Europe. I went to the local electronics store. I got one of the last copies before it was sold out. Played it. Loved it. A superb online-mode, a spectacular multiplayer mode, and lots of unlockables....

Pros (Latin for good) :
  • Huge number of courses, including some of the most imaginative yet
  • Deeply integrated online play
  • Easy to jump into for players of any skill level
  • Fun and strategic trick system
  • Motorcycles provide a great alternative to go-karts.
Contras (Latin for bad) :

  • Nostalgia doesn't save most of the classic courses from being boring
  • Items are more unbalanced than ever, especially on new tracks
  • Battle modes are now exclusively team-based and timed.

One may wonder why Nintendo would add motorcycles and dirt bikes to the game series that popularized, if not invented, the genre of weapons-based go-kart racing. If you're one of the fans who balked at the inclusion of two-wheeled vehicles, a midair stunt system, and motion controls, rest assured that despite these changes, Mario Kart Wii is still very much the game that you have come to love over the years. But even if you haven't been on the receiving end of a blue shell before, the extensive multiplayer options, deeply integrated online functionality, multitude of controller schemes available, and simple gameplay make this latest Mario Kart great fun and quite possibly the most accessible one ever.

The main event of Mario Kart is the Grand Prix mode, which in you must play in order to unlock some characters, karts and more. There is the 50cc, the 100cc and the 150cc mode. You can also unlock the *Mirror Cup* , where all tracks and signs are mirrored. This is very fun, because you aren´t used to it. But this one broke the Mario Kart tradition : You can only play the Grand Prix mode solo (rather than multi-player) !!

16 new, and 16 retro tracks are available. The combination of both new and nostalgic retro levels makes Mario Kart the cremé de la cremé in track choosing. One of the major new features is the midair stunt system, which is activated by flicking the Wii Remote at the very moment you leave the ground from a ramp-assisted jump, making your racer perform an extreme-sports-style trick, such as a 360-degree spin, which upon landing rewards you with a considerable speed boost. To facilitate this new mechanic, most new tracks include huge half-pipes, rampant ramps, a multitude of moguls, and a plethora of pits, all of which are deliberately placed to encourage extensive stunt work. While this new system itself isn't flawed and in fact injects a great deal of fun and new strategy into the gameplay, its influence on course design has made certain items even deadlier, as you're that much more likely to be blasted uncontrollably into lava or other hazards due to how much time you spend in the air.

Online integration is deeper than most other games on the Wii, and you can join matches of any game type with friends as well as strangers from your local region or across the world. You have a persistent score, which is either increased or decreased by your performances, and when seeking out matches you're automatically place with like-skilled opponents revealed on a representation of Earth that uses Miis to show the approximate locations of the competition. In the event that you join a game already in progress, you will automatically be placed in a spectator mode until the round finishes and it's go time. Communication between players online is still virtually nonexistent, but while the ability to smack talk is a vital element of local multiplayer, it's not necessary for facilitating matches.

The most interesting online feature of Mario Kart Wii is the Mario Kart Channel, which can either be launched from within the game or saved directly into your Wii dashboard. Using WiiConnect24, you can compare your best lap times against your friends' and the rest of the region or the world. You can also download ghost replays to see firsthand how the top players pull off their times and send your own ghosts to friends as a challenge, and if this channel has been installed in the Wii menu, you can even do all of this without having your Mario Kart disc in the system.

Mario Kart Wii features a cast of 25 characters, over half of which must be unlocked through various accomplishments in single- or multiplayer modes. The ability to race as one of your Miis is perhaps the most notable new feature, but as great as putting Chuck Norris or Dr. Gregory House behind the wheel is, some of the newcomers like Baby Daisy and Dry Bowser are underwhelming and disappointing. Unlike Mario Kart: Double Dash, characters don't have items specific to them, but they do have up to 12 personalized motorcycles and go-karts to select from to determine racing stats.

Graphically, there isn't very much of a leap between this latest Mario Kart and its predecessor on the GameCube, but there are a lot of little details that add to the experience. Crowds of onlookers are populated by your Miis, and posters or statues throughout the levels can feature them as well. Lighting is vastly improved, and there are a number of nice environmental effects. Electricity crackles around you after you've been blasted by a lightning bolt. However, there is a considerable degradation of graphical quality in split-screen multiplayer--especially with four players--and character models are unnaturally shiny.

*Which controller should I use ?*

Wii-Remote (With Wii-Wheel) ★★★/★★★★★

This controlling method is recommendable for casual gamers. So you can drift better, Nintendo built in a big button on the back side. Negative points : Professional gamers wouldn´t like the Wii Wheel. It´s to imprecise for the harder levels. 3 out of 5

Mario Kart Wii Review

Yahoo !! Finally, Mario Kart Wii is here . How many of you were a bit nervous when Nintendo announced that Mario Kart Wii would be released so soon? How many of you started thinking it might be a 'rush job' to fill a gap in the Wii release schedule? How many saw the bikes and thought "oh no, they've ruined Mario Kart"? We'll admit it: deep down, we were worried about all of the above. It turns out we should have known better .

1.0
----Introduction-----

A long story short: It's Mario Kart! It's not some warped, twisted monster that used to be Mario Kart and has now mutated into some horrible kart/bike shambles that's lost its magic. That familiar, addictive Mario Kart gameplay is still there, only now it's even better.

There are 12 playable characters when you first start the game, with a bunch of racers to unlock. We won't spoil them just now but, needless to say, a couple of the hidden characters are surprise inclusions who haven't been in a Mario Kart game before. Some characters are only known by the hardest nerds in the business ..... Example : Toadette. Like expected the weight classes are back in force, with characters split into light, medium and heavy classes. At first, each weight class has a choice of three different karts and three different bikes, but more are unlockable as you progress.

Mario Kart Wii has a new controller called the "Wii Wheel" . I don´t really like it, because it´s inaccurate and for "Casual Gamers" (yuck). But it´s the best gaming wheel on a Nintendo console, no doubt.

2.0
-------The First Touch------

The moment of truth overwhelmed me as I opened the game. While it suck completely ? How will the Wii Wheel work ? I had to find out. Like the good old tradition, I choose the 50ccm class. Here the opponents are really foolish and easy to trick out. For casual gamers : It´s the easiest class.

[<{¡Playable Chaos!}>]

You will experience explosions mostly colored and shaped. You control a itsy bitsy spaceship over a limited area. While you control with the stick, you aim with the cursor and shoot with A or B.A thick laser shows you the direction of your shot. Also,a drone floats with you who can help you in different situations.Well, you guested it,there must be evil spaceships too. They are real crazy, like if you stolen lollipops from 100 4-year olds.Ouch.Even touching your enemy costs you a live.By the chaos of tons of enemys there will be adrenaline. With a little bit practice you should enter slowly the highscore-tables and fight your way to the top.It really motivates to try to achieve a better score. It is still disappointing that you can lose your eye on the ship and shoot into nowhere.

(.:?What The Hell Are Geoms?:.)

Defeated enemys transform into little items called Geoms. If ya collect them, you could unlock new levels and new drone-skills but also as point multiplication. You can get up to 150-times the normal score. Then you get instead of lousy 25 points for an enemy 3750 points for one hit.Only this way you will achieve the gold-medallion.

Super Hang-On Review

Well, this is a Review of the most popular Sega Motorcycling game EVER.
I personally say that the music is AWESOME.I like Outride a Crisis and Winning Run.
The Graphics are O.K ,but the Gameplay is the BEST.You race around the World with
your Cycle starting with Africa and ending with the United States of America. In each
stage you have a Time Limit. There are other Racers on the road, but they would
not bother you.You think of them as trees that move with almost 300 kmh.
Now a list:
Africa:Beginner
Asia:Junior
Europe:Senior
North America:Expert
This game is HARD.If you crash once, this Run is almost impossible to complete. This
Guy is slower than a Turtle. It takes time to fly for 40 feet after you crash, time
to walk back, and time to accelerate to your previous Speed.
All in all, this is truly a classic.

Super Metriod

Super Metroid is an adventure video game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System video game console. Super Metroid is the third installment in the Metroid series of video games. With its 24-megabit cartridge size, it was the largest game available for the console at the time of its release.

Super Metroid is a 2-D platform video game with action and adventure elements. Game progression revolves around sequentially gathering power-ups that allow Samus Aran (the main character) to overcome obstacles in order to access new parts of the world. Like most 2-D Metroid games, the world has a non-linear design and features many hidden areas, making exploration a central concept of the game.

Super Metroid was also made available on the Wii's Virtual Console service on August 20, 2007 in North America, as part of the "Month of Metroid" Wii Shop Channel event.

Samus in the aquatic world, Maridia

Super Metroid shares many aspects of gameplay with other games in the Metroid series. It takes place in a large, open-ended world with different areas that are connected via doors and elevators. Samus traverses the planet through its complex cavities to hunt down the Space Pirates. In order to progress in the game, Samus must defeat four main bosses: Kraid, the giant lizard whose base makes up a large part of Brinstar; Phantoon, a spectral entity that controls the desolate Wrecked Ship; Draygon, a crustacean monstrosity that occupies a submerged pirate lab in Maridia; and Ridley, who controls Norfair.

Items

From the inventory screen, the player can enable or disable weapons and other abilities.
From the inventory screen, the player can enable or disable weapons and other abilities.

There are two uses for items and equipment found in the game world: to defeat enemies and to overcome obstacles found in the environment. Some items augment the type of weapon the main character uses. Some items help facilitate the progression of the game by gaining new abilities that allows the player to explore areas that were previously inaccessible. Other items, like energy and reserve tanks increase Samus' maximum life total.

Plot

After extinguishing the Metroids on their home planet of SR-388 in Metroid II: Return of Samus, bounty hunter Samus Aran brings the last surviving Metroid larva to the Ceres Space Colony. There, scientists conduct research on the larva and reach the conclusion that the powers of Metroids could be harnessed for the benefit of mankind. Confident that things are in order, Samus leaves Ceres in search of a new bounty to hunt. However, shortly after leaving, Samus picks up a distress call from Ceres and returns to investigate. As Samus explores the space colony, she is attacked by the dragon-like Ridley. Samus and Ridley engage in battle, but Ridley soon flies off with the larva in his talons. At the same time, a countdown sets off for the self-destruction of the space colony and Samus has 60 seconds to return to her gunship.

Samus follows Ridley to planet Zebes, the home of the Space Pirates. The base was destroyed in the first Metroid game, but has now been rebuilt. It should be noted that a whole section of Crateria, the first section of Zebes, looks like Tourian from the first game (dubbed Old Tourian), with Mother Brain's old control chamber. She sets out to locate the Metroid larva and prevent the Pirates from gaining use of its powers. After defeating the four main bosses, Samus battles her way through Tourian, encountering newly bred Metroids. After passing through several corridors filled with crumbling enemies, she encounters a Metroid of incredible size. Before she can escape, the giant creature drains most of her life force. However, it seems to recognize Samus just in time; it appears that this huge Metroid is the larva taken from SR388. According to the Nintendo Power Player's Guide, the huge Metroid is aptly named "Super Metroid". As in the beginning of the game, "The Metroid followed [Samus] like [she] was its mother."

After the Metroid departs, Samus recovers her energy and confronts Mother Brain. After Samus shatters the creature's stasis tank and inflicts enough damage, Mother Brain attaches itself to a giant mechanical body and the battle begins again. During the battle, Mother Brain uses a massive burst of energy from its eye, nearly destroying Samus. Samus finds herself unable to move while Mother Brain charges up to finish her off. Before the final blow can be inflicted, however, the Super Metroid suddenly attacks Mother Brain, draining its energy until it appears dead. The Metroid then attaches itself to Samus and begins feeding its energy to her. However, Mother Brain soon recovers and begins firing upon the hatchling, weakening it until it lifts off of Samus. A final shot destroys the hatchling, leaving its remains to fall upon Samus.

Pulsating with light, Samus now finds that she possesses the Hyper Beam, an incredibly powerful weapon that has replaced her other beams. With it, she easily destroys Mother Brain, who falls to the floor and turns to dust. This in turn triggers a self-destruct sequence, giving Samus a mere three minutes to escape through the emergency evacuation shaft of the original base. Along the way, Samus rescues several Etecoons and a Dachora, then she makes it to her gunship just in time and takes off, watching the planet explode in a flash of light.

Development

Super Metroid was the third game produced in the Metroid series. The game's early planning began in 1990 with Nintendo's Nintendo Research & Development 1 (R&D1) headed by Yoshio Sakamoto. The first-party developer Intelligent Systems, consisting of former members of R&D1, was asked to program the game. With a total of 22 people, the game was completed in 1993.[4]

Reception

At the time of its release, Super Metroid was universally praised. To this day, it remains one of the most popular and critically lauded games not only for the Super NES, but in all of gaming history. It has sold 1.4 million units (780.000 in Japan and 460.000 in North America)[citation needed], becoming a Player's Choice. It frequently appears in "best games of all time" lists; Electronic Gaming Monthly has named Super Metroid the best game of all time,[5], it came in 4th place on the reader's choice edition of IGN's 100 greatest video games of all time, and IGN ranked it the third best game of all time in its 2003 "top 100" list, and fourth best game of all time in its most recent 2006 list, with the motivation:

"Hailed as one of the best 2D adventures ever, Nintendo's sci-fi epic still provides one of the most thought out and intriguing gameplay experiences around. Ranging from extensive platform challenges to gigantic boss battles to a comprehensive power-up system, Super Metroid has attained a divine place in the hearts of longtime gamers. Certainly, it stands as something players and developers can idolize for years to come."[6]

Swedish game publication Super PLAY ranked Super Metroid number 6 in the "top 100" list its March 2003 issue, commenting on its atmosphere (the following is a translation from Swedish):

The graphics and sound form a wonderful symbiosis, creating an almost tangible atmosphere. Concerning the looks, there is no individual part that sticks out; the game maintains an even, stable, and thoroughly crafted graphical style. The music mostly consists of reserved, dark and mystical melodies that lurk in the background. After a while they consume you, fully immersing you in the Samus role. And the role is indeed an exciting one to play. The pure joy of exploration is on top and constantly makes you thirst for more.

In a Metroid feature in its December 2002 issue, Super PLAY also noted the game's care to detail:

Super Metroid remains one of the most well made adventures ever produced. Every detail, from the echoing ice shafts to the statue that shifts color to illustrate which of the game's four bosses have been defeated, is indicative of an almost manic dedication among the developers at R&D1.

In the July 2006 issue of GamePro, Super Metroid was listed as one of the "15 Retro Games For The Nintendo Wii You Must Play".

Legacy

Super Metroid served as a formula for subsequent 2-D games in the Metroid series, as it refined and provided a definitive version of concepts introduced in the first two Metroid games.

The two-dimensional Castlevania games beginning with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the PlayStation/Sega Saturn and continuing on the Game Boy Advance and DS borrow elements from Super Metroid, such as the "retraversal" style of gameplay involving items that grant new abilities to access new areas, as well as the style of map. This has led to the creation of the terms "Castleroid" and "Metroidvania", used when describing similar action-adventure games.

Speedrunning

Super Metroid's open-ended gameplay style has made it a popular choice for speedruns. Due to unintended sequence breaks, many players compete to see who can complete the game fastest, or with the fewest items, or both. This has caused Super Metroid to be a major contributor to the speedrun phenomenon, and one of the most popular games for both assisted (assisted: using an emulator to play the game, and using tools like single frame advance, or slowdown) and unassisted speedruns.

Noahs Ark

NOAH'S ARK

Platform: NES
Developer: Konami

It just isn't funny anymore. This is the third time I'm writing about a game where you control Noah. This time, animals all over the world are kidnapped by various cultures. In the first level, for instance, you have to travel across Europe to save a rabbit from the Romans. Yes. You have to travel across a continent, killing all sorts of animals and people (well, they'll be dead when the cataclysm comes anyway) to get one single goddamned rabbit from a culture that won't exist for another 6,000 years.

What separates this game from all other Bible-related games featured on this site, is that this one isn't created by Wisdom Tree, but by Konami. Unlike Wisdom Tree, Konami doesn't have a god to answer to, and this of course results in a game that's ever further away from the original cataclysm story.

In fact, saying that Escape From L.A. is based on the life of Helen Keller would be closer to the truth than calling this game Noah's Ark. If a game is about an old guy who gathers animals, lives on a boat for thirty days, repopulates the earth, invents wine and drinks enough of it to pass out in front of his sons, it can be called Noah's Ark. If it's about a senile old bastard who imagines ancient cultures have kidnapped animals, it can't.

Furthermore, I can't remember where in the Bible it says that Noah destroyed Satan. But now I know it was the Prince of Darkness himself that manipulated the Japanese into capturing a panda! Oh, you crafty devil you!

Well, all incoherence aside, this game is not even close to being as cruddy as the Wisdom Tree ones. The graphics are pretty good given the limitations of the NES, and at least it's possible to make Noah do what you want this time (in Bible Games, he would drop his cows, start climbing a tree and get killed by a woodpecker if you wanted him to walk left). This means playing Noah's Ark is only marginally more painful than having to live in a volcano.

At least, they didn't leave out the part where Noah grew wings and fought the Inca sun god. Oh no! Caesar is born 6,000 years early, and has ordered to capture the rabbit Noah had in mind!
The Abominable Snowman has teamed up with the Inuits to kidnap a seal. It's a good thing Noah wore a thick blanket when he went to the South Pole. Special appearance by Keiko.
After numerous unsuccessful diets, Satan decided to grow lots of chest hair to cover up the pot-belly. Most historians agree that the world would be quite different hadn't Noah been too drunk to remember the Alamo.

In this game, you kill the Romans, Native Americans, Egyptians, Japanese, Inuits, Aborigines and Incas. At least God's servant isn't discriminating.

Game Boy Article

Game Boy

The original Game Boy.
The original Game Boy.

The original Game Boy was released on April 21, 1989 in Japan and in August 1989 in the United States with an MSRP of US$100. Based around a Z80 processor, it has a black and green reflective LCD screen, an eight-way directional pad, two action buttons, and Start and Select buttons. It plays games from ROM-based media contained in small plastic detachable units called cartridges (sometimes abbreviated as carts or GamePaks).

The killer game that pushed the Game Boy into the upper reaches of success was Tetris. Tetris was widely popular, and on the handheld format could be played anywhere. It came packaged with the Game Boy, and broadened its reach; adults and kids alike were buying Game Boys in order to play Tetris. Releasing Tetris on the Game Boy was selected as #4 on GameSpy's "25 Smartest Moments in Gaming".[5]

The original Game Boy was the first cartridge-based system that supported more than four players at one time (via the link port). In fact, it has been shown that the system could support 16 simultaneous players at once. However, this feature was only supported in Faceball 2000.

Mario 64 Review

The Good

  • Very accurate emulation
  • graphics might be ugly in spots, but they still hold up pretty well most of the time
  • catchy soundtrack
  • collecting 120 stars means you'll be busy for a while, unless you've already memorized every nook and cranny of the game.

The Bad

  • A couple of minor emulation issues
  • camera can often be a pain to deal with.

One of the interesting aspects of the Wii is its Virtual Console service, which lets you pay to download emulated versions of old games from the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit eras. At launch, only one Nintendo 64 game was available, and it's exactly the game you expect to see. Super Mario 64, which released alongside the N64 back in 1996, was the game that defined the 3D platformer as we know it today. Sure, you'll have to babysit the camera controls, and those textures look ugly by today's standards, but all in all, this game holds up well on the Wii and is a solid version of an all-time great.

The story's very simple and, really, as old as time itself. The princess, you know, Peach? She's been kidnapped by the tubby dragon called Bowser. Mario shows up at Peach's castle thinking that there's a party going on, but the only party happening here is the boot party that Mario's going to have on Bowser's face as soon as he catches up with him and rescues the princess. But before you can fight Bowser, you've got to earn a whole mess of power stars. You earn most of these stars in the game's levels, which provide you with large environments and plenty of different-yet-standard themes. So you've got the snow level, the lava level, the water level, the other water level, and so on. While a modern platformer might get chastised for sticking so closely to the script, it's only because it's Mario's script in the first place. You won't need to collect every single star to beat the game, which is nice because it gives you alternative places to go when or if you get stuck on a particular task. Even after all this time, the game's good enough that you might want to keep at it until you collect all 120 stars.

On the Wii, you'll need to plug in a controller to play Super Mario 64 because it doesn't work at all with the Wii Remote. Although the game claims to work only with the Classic Controller, a GameCube controller works just fine. The N64's C buttons are mapped to the right analog stick on the GameCube controller, and this works well for controlling the camera. The rest of the buttons are mapped accordingly, which means that you have to use the tiny Z button on the GameCube controller more often than you'd probably like. But overall, the controls work just fine and are as responsive as in the original version.

One issue with the visuals is that thng in e Wii Virtual Console will stretch this game (and others) out to a 16:9 aspect ratio if you play it on a widescreen TV, irrespective of the Wii display settings you've selected, even though the game was designed for standard 4:3 aspect ratio screens. Regardless, this version of Super Mario 64 probably looks a bit better than the original, especially when you're running 480p over a component cable. The game gets sharp in a way that it couldn't on the N64, though some edges get a bit too sharp, making seams in the world and some other edges look a little weird. Also, the higher resolution certainly doesn't do the textures any favors, but considering this game is a decade old now, it still looks quite nice. The emulation appears to be accurate, though we did notice the game pause for a split second on a few occasions, which stuck out a bit. The sound and music were among the high points of the original game, and all that catchy music and all the lively sound effects come across really well on the Wii.

It probably says something about how little platformers have progressed over the past decade if Super Mario 64 holds up this well. A few aspects of the game, such as the camera controls and the coin collection tasks, feel a little dated, but most new platformers still can't match this one's style and creativity. And at a going price of 1,000 Wii points ($10), Super Mario 64 is a heck of a deal.
